The Best Answer for Predict whether the aqueous solution of the following compounds will be acidic, basic or neutral.?

Hydrolysis... predict acid, basic or neutral

The cations of strong bases and the anions of strong acids do not hydrolyze and therefore, do not affect the pH of the solution. Cations of weak bases react with water (hydrolyze) to form acidic solutions. Anions of weak acids hydrolyze to form basic solutions.

a. NH4Br ...... acidic

NH4+ + 4HOH --> NH3 + H9O4^+ (H9O4^+ is the "new" H3O+)

b. FeCl3 ....... acidic

Fe3+ + HOH --> FeOH^2+ + H+

c. K2CO3 ..... basic

CO3^2- + HOH --> HCO3^- + OH-

d. KCIO4 ...... neutral

no hydrolysis; KOH is strong base, HClO4 is strong acid

e. NaBr ......... neutral

no hydrolysis; NaOH is strong base, HBr is strong acid

f. MgCl2 ........ acidic

Mg2+ + HOH --> MgOH^+ + H+

g. NaF............ basic

F- + HOH --> HF + OH-

h. LiNO3 ....... neutral

no hydrolysis; LiOH is strong base, HNO3 is strong acid
